Most Amish homes seem to always be spotless. Amish women run the household. And are usually excellent homemakers. But the Amish do have some practices that contribute to their homes being so clean and spotless. It is certainly not an easy task to have eight or more children running around, and still have everything in order and clean. But that is usually the case in Amish homes. How do they do it?
Minimal Decor Pieces To Clean And Dust
Amish folks do not decorate their homes with many things that you would find in a traditional English home. They do have home decor. But way less, and their home decor are usually functionally. Without a lot of decor pieces to sort through, keep in place, dust regularly and keep sparkly, cleaning is a lot less hectic. And their homes are easier to stay in good shape.
Create A Routine And Make It A Priority
The Amish are a very organized group. And their activities surrounding their homes are patterned into routines and schedules. The women take their housekeeping duties seriously and normally have a schedule. For example, in most Amish communities, you will find that laundry day is normally on a Monday. Setting a cleaning schedule helps Amish women to keep on track and get their chores done in a timely manner.
Keep It Plain
Plain curtains are used in Amish homes. They are plain with attire, and they have the same approach with curtains. No frills and complications to deal with. This makes washing easier and ironing too.
Opt For Flooring That Is Easy To Maintain And Clean
Floors are normally finished with hardwood or linoleum. Wood is long-lasting, doesn’t show dirt easily and very much easy to clean. Linoleum is even easier to clean than hardwood. Although it may show dirt more easily depending on the color, a quick sweep with the broom or a little mopping will take care of the dirt. A lot of Old Order Amish families opt for wood or linoleum flooring.
Make It A Family Thing
Amish women play a major role in keeping things clean around the home. But their homes are not cleaned and kept clean by just the women. Family members all play their part. They have a system that works well for having a well kept home. The children are given tasks from a young age, and learn to help maintain their homes.
Use Furniture That Are Easy To Dust And Clean
Most Amish homes do not have vacuums. However, furniture pieces are not usually fully upholstered. And most times they have vinyl finishing. This makes it easy to dust them and keep them clean. Also, most chairs with cushions or padding have removable covers. Making them easy to clean and freshen up by throwing them in the washer. Then hanging them outside in the sun to dry.
These practices are not unique to Amish homes. But they are a part of their way of life. They all contribute to why Amish homes are so clean and why their dining tables are always ready for their families to gather and enjoy the warmth of home. Cleanliness plays a great part in making any house a home. And having a lifestyle that naturally contributes to this makes housekeeping way easier.
